halfscot.. I'm not a defender of the President, though to object to the process as its unfolded thus far would appear to support your contention.

It's agreed by all parties that the president can be held accountable under the law once he leaves office with impeachment being the remedy while he's in office.

Yes to "accountable once he leaves," no to being the remedy while in office.

There are many many arguments to support both sides of this issue although Clinton makes it much more difficult for his acolytes to garner support due to his slimy behavior.

Well spoken and shows your obvious ability to recognize more than an absolutist's view. I'm not baiting you by saying this. I too vary on coming to a conclusive argument.

When this happens, I look back over the whole of this process, from before Clinton took office. Its obvious he's had some shady dealings and that he's a womanizer. Yet I must grant Starr the dubious credit of being one of the most thorough investigators in history. If he didn't find within twice the time it took to fight WWII, using 50 million dollars and untold government resources, including the full weight of federal intimidation... any evidence worthy of presentation to Congress other than where he and his office appeared to collude by inaction with the Jones case to snare lies about Monica... I'm not convinced that's how I want my government to provide law and order in the future.

One may argue perjury is perjury, but life isn't black and white. The office of the Presidency in my opinion is different. It is both held to a higher and lower standard. We expect our Presidents to be both scoundrels in dealing with threats to the US and to be saints when they kiss babies during elections. These have been fortunate times for this country. In part, the fact that we are trying to politically undo the people's choice with debatable "crimes" not supported by a plurality shows how good times really are. If we were at war, or in depression this kind of good times pursuit wouldn't be tolerated.

If on the other hand the President had committed obvious acts of treason or acted as Nixon did to use the system to abuse the system, I'd be first in line to pull him down.
