Well, well, well, first Perry LaForge, now George Gilder. You can tell when the war is nearly won - the generals come rushing up from behind and lead the troops to victory. [I know you and Perry have been very interested for years but I'd hate to spoil a good story].

Thanks for the first hand reports on how intricately involved in CDMA the GSM people were George. I can say the same for Telecom New Zealand Mobile technical staff in Feb 1996, though they were certainly aware of CDMA in reasonable detail. Your comments give the lie to Tero's and the GSM gang's claims of a decade long intense effort in VW40 [please excuse the in-words like VW40 which means W-CDMA]. It is simply incredible.

Regarding the pdQ, I expect the jaded denizens of the Q! thread will believe it when they see it actually on sale in shops and passing the guarantee period unscathed. We are [many of us] also softened up and in a post-Zenit hibernation state while Globalstar finally gets some photons flying maybe in the next millennium. The Q Phone took a long time to arrive and then the plastic broke. CdmaOne also took an extra two years to arrive.

But good things are worth waiting for. Heck, people are still waiting patiently for the second coming - I hope it isn't before the pdQ.

PS: You inadvertently wrote Irving Jacobs instead of Irwin.

I bet the pdQ doesn't even have a Vegemite dispenser so it will be like a Model T in the WWeb world. Moderately useful, better than walking, but not really up to the task, so better models will have to follow quickly.

Thanks again for taking time from your busy life to pop some first hand information in here. I'm sure we all appreciate it. Other than Tero.

Phil Karn,.... began agitating for inclusion of a TCP-IP
protocol stack in every cellphone.
...
Qualcomm CDMA thus is uniquely adapted to the net, as will
become obvious with the introduction of the pdQ Palm-phone next year. I predict it will become the most popular PC on the
market.

Are you implying that the Palm Phone(same as pdQ) will have an IP
stack (some kind of IP over IS95 ?) built into it. That would be
cool, and can enable a lot of applications, but I have not seen
that claim anywhere. I have heard some heresy that current
networks carry packets too small to fit 20 bytes of IP
header...but I could be wrong.

I am sure there will be some integration of things such as phone
lists, appointments etc to phone features, but I have not seen claims
of IP connectivity in pdQ or any other cell phone. It might happen
some day ofcourse.
