Spin City Road Map: When Sun Microsystems Inc. recently unveiled a
new version of its Solaris operating system, the company's public-relations
staff drew up an internal memo that listed major business publications --
and how Sun would like to see each outlet cover the story. The list shows
that the big workstation company certainly was ambitious. The angle for
Business Week, for example, was: "Sun stakes claim in Internet
everywhere." That wasn't to be confused with the pitch for the Financial
Times: "Sun stakes claim to enterprise sweet spot." Forbes magazine was
supposed to tell how "Sun pulls away from NT."

The New York Times's angle was to
be "Why Solaris is the [operating
system] of choice for the Fortune
500." The Wall Street Journal's
article was supposed to show how
"Sun fortifies leadership position with
software offering." The list suggested
that both the Associated Press and Reuters were spin-resistant, as neither
of them were pitched a specific story angle, but were instead expected to
write "straight news." That, by the way, is how nearly all the outlets ended
up covering the story. Sun officials were unavailable for comment during
the holidays.
