Michael --

ADSL has grown in acceptance at the development level and yet been stalled by RBOC's dragging their feet as many predicted they would. From everything I hear from TI, the chips are progressing better than expected and I think will be shipping first quarter. I haven't asked for awhile, so don't quote me on that. I just know the last tests came back far better than expected.

With the government's blessing on the TCI-AT&T merger yesterday, the competition has made a giant leap towards pushing cable as a competitive answer to the last mile. I never thought I'd join the "enemy," but right now my last mile play is Com21 [CMTO].

In terms of looking back a year to when TI-Amati merged, you can well imagine how many times I've thanked the Gods That Be for not having to go through the October downturn alone.

It would take all day to enumerate the lessons learned. I've just bought a book called "Burn Rate" by Michael Wolff that promises to be a riveting read and I have no doubt whatsoever I'll find places where I can say, "Yes, but you haven't heard my story. :))

Many told me the backbone had to be upgraded in order to handle ADSL and you'll find it no surprise that Newbridge Networks [NN] is currently my largest holding. If you don't follow it, put it on your watch list.

As for the old Amati gang, I still keep in touch and in fact sit on a committe with John Cioffi.

We live in an age that has few equals and I'm standing on tip-toe at the very edge.

Cheers!

Pat
