On the other side of the house, we Canadians do wonder how the Republicans come up with such wonderful candidates. It was truly daunting to think that Spiro Agnew and Dan Quale were indeed heartbeats away from being leaders of the free world.

Does Dan know that we finally knocked down the last of our igloos and are now living in canvas lean-tos?

Re only a heartbeat away from the presidency. It is subtle but it was first used in speaking of Teddy Roosevelt when he was McKinley's vice president.
