Richard, this is the first time since the early '97 where I've seen biotechs being actively accumulated. More to the point, I just received the annual "Janus Report"(and these guys have been incredibly good this year). They're starting a new fund to be known as "Global Life Sciences", to be managed by Tom Malley(?).
The Janus report states: "The whole life sciences group is entering a new era. And while it might be another 5 to 10 years before some of these companies reach their full potential, he's convinced that when they do, the industry as a whole will have even a greater impact on economic growth....For now he(Malley) believes that biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies are the ones to watch".
In looking through other Janus funds, I noted they've purchased Incyte, Medimmune, and Sepracor.
I believe I hear the ice thawing for 2nd and 3rd tier biotechs.
BTW, I had an extremely interesting talk with the ARIA CFO today. Had I not a slug of stock/warrants I would have bought more at $1 1/2.
Here's to the renaissance of biotechs in '99!!!!
