There is a rumor around at Yahoo message group
about Cisco takeover CIEN. I think that it makes
sense if Cisco makes this move sometime next year.
Telecoms are very conservative, and don't want to
deal with outsider. CIEN's business are mainly
focusing on big telecoms such as sprint, WCOM, or
some Japanese telecom. They have a very good
relationship with those. Beside, CIEN's fiber
technology is superior than others. They have big
business and talking about 100+ millions deal.
If Cisco really want to fight with Northern Telecom
or Lucent, its management should use CIEN as their
gateway to penetrate to traditional telecom business.
Optical fibre and IPOA (IP over ATM) are two big
winning elements for telecom business. Data is growing
too fast. Too many people are using telephone line
to online these days.
