<OT> Government can't stop the will of the people.

Ah... come again? Is it the will of the Cuban, Russian, (fill in your favorite example) to live in poverty? Was it the will of the Germans to have their country devastated? Was it the will of the French to replace Louis XVI with an Emperor? Why is every revolution betrayed? Oh, and didn't Clinton recently get impeached? Fortunately, we still live in a Republic.

You talk like government is this controlling entity as though we live in a police state.

Unfortunately, that is the sad state of affairs for 2/3 of the world's population. Where, by the way, ATHM will need to go before reaching 28,000 per share or whatever it was that you estimated.

Always pleading for government protection.

No, I differentiate my political and investment philosophies, otherwise you can have your head handed to you. I thought it was idiotic for the DOJ to go after MSFT, and if they had not done so I would have all my marbles on that gorilla. But given political reality, I try to invest by playing the politico-economic realities.

The true intent is to have government protect your money from the threat of competition which you know will make you work harder for less.

Again, the reality is that it matters not one bit what you or I think about the goodness or evil of government intervention. S*t happens. And if we play it right, we profit from it.

Further proof of your college education.

Well, I have tried to overcome that handicap, but it is difficult. "-)

"The idea is to keep people in their places so that nobody thinks they're better than someone else. Who could argue with the truth of that? "

I think it's more akin to a group of people trying to decide where to eat. It is not as efficient to allow each person some measure of input in the short term, but it pays off in the long run by allowing each a say and thus avoiding conflict in the future. I think your statement is more a by product than an intent of govt. After all, we created it.

Some people certainly abuse the system, but that is the fault of the individual not the group. And there is no way you will suddenly turn people into altruistic souls overnight. But don't confuse the short comings of the individuals with the possible abuses of the group system.
