Com21 Cumulative Cable Modem
Shipments Top 54,000
Cable Modem Start-Up Hopes to Maintain
Momentum During DOCSIS Market Transition

Com21 Inc. reported it shipped 54,000 cable modems and 390 headend systems to operators worldwide through September 30, 1998.

David Robertson, Com21's chief financial officer, says the company shipped 23,000 cable modems and 91 headends in the third quarter alone. As a result, the company generated $13.7 million in sales for the quarter, up from $8.7 million in Q2. For the first nine months of 1998 Com21's revenues totaled $29.4 million, compared to $9.0 million for the same period in 1997. According to Robertson, Com21 equipment is now installed in cable headends passing approximately 7 million homes worldwide.

Com21 currently offers one of the strongest proprietary cable modem systems on the market. Its ATM-based platform was the first to deliver true quality of service (QoS) capabilities, and through solid RF engineering, the Com21 system has been able to operate reliably on imperfect cable plants. Com21 was also the first vendor to offer a quality virtual local area network (VLAN) solution.

Com21's customer list now includes TCI, Charter Communications and Prime Cable in the U.S., as well as Cablecom, France Telecom, NV Eneco, Telekabel, Telia Stofa and Telindus in Europe. Other international customers include Tokyo Cable Network in Japan and Cablevision of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

As one of the few remaining independent cable modem developers, Com21 is a prime acquisition target as carrier equipment vendors like Lucent and Siemens look to round out their HFC access product portfolios.
