Toshiba Setting Up Subsidiary To Produce, Sell DVD Software

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Toshiba Corp. (6502) will establish a subsidiary to develop and market software for the digital video disk format from April, company officials said. The company plans to split off the visual software department from its main Tokyo office and merge it with the new company.

Toshiba has already invested in a digital satellite communications company and purchased a stake in Time Warner of the U.S. to strengthen its multimedia contents business.

The new company, capitalized at 1.2 billion yen, will have 150 employees, including 50 staff from the head office. It will produce and sell DVDs for the entertainment, education and documentary categories as well as produce public relations DVDs for both the government and private sectors.

First-year sales are targeted at 5 billion yen, with annual turnover of 10 billion yen in fiscal 2002. The market for DVD software in Japan is now about 6 billion yen a year, but industry observers expect it to rise to 35 billion yen in 2000.
