The figures say that IBM is a mature business and most people do not expect break-neck growth for the business. Therefore people are not bidding up the stock.

They obviously think the opposite for ATHM.

I am not saying the public is right.

Personally, I kind of agree with the idea that people will buy stock in a business if it has sound backing and a real potential for very big growth. When that picture stops, poeple take their money elsewhere.

Not true in every case, however. Lately a lot of IPOs (like UBID) are being brought to market with very little stock offered. This puts the stock in demand quickly and the price goes up because of that.
