Christine,

I think it sometimes appears that I am defending Israel. I am not. Trying to understand something does not necessarily mean defending it. We are discussing the reasons why the Jews did what they did. Emile seems to think that they did it because they are Jews and Jews always do awful things like that. I tried to point out that their behaviour is rooted in their experience in Europe. It went on a bit. For the record, I would like to see the US using its aid package as a lever to force Israel into a more amenable stance. I think it's already happening, though it could be pushed quite a bit harder. I don't think aid should be withdrawn altogether, for a number of reasons.

any group which is discriminated against and butchered, and then turns around fifteen years later and acts in the same horrendous way against an innocent group

People do that a lot, and while disappointing, it shouldn't be unexpected. The example of parents who were abused as children turning around and abusing their own children was chosen for a reason. Logic says that they of all people should know better. Logic does not always prevail.

would have a totally different outcome without America propping Israel up politically and militarily.

What would have happened in that case may not have been very nice either. All this has made me a bit curious, and I will have to open a book or two this week if I have time. I'm trying to remember what kind of US support Israel had in its first 10 years, and how the support curve changed with certain key events. Will be interesting to see.
