Based on available information, the K7, at least in it's early version, will have L2 that runs at 1/3 the core rate. It will also most likely have a L2 bus width that is smaller that it would be if it were integrated into the core. Therefore it will likely have 1/6th the bandwidth that Intel's Xeons will have (which will have integrated L2 at up to 2 Mega Bytes or more). The pincount will be much greater due to the L2 data bus and the address and control lines. This will add significantly to the packaging and test cost.

Why does everyone think that the K7 is automatically going to have 8 MB of L2 cache in it? Don't people realize that the 8 MB L2 cache size was given as a theoretical maximum?

I don't think the K7 is going to get 8 MB of L2 cache any time soon, or even 2 MB for that matter. AMD might want to wait a year or two as the K7 platform matures and the processor speeds increase before going for 2 MB or more of L2 cache.

Are you forgetting that the K7 will have an OFF-CHIP L2 cache that runs at only 1/3 of the CPU speed, and "maybe" 1/2, if they are lucky?
