If the government insists that Microsoft has a monopoly in OS, then it is the consumers who should be blamed. The consumers tend to be more loyal to software than hardware. If no one told me that my PC is now powered by an AMD K6 CPU,
I will never know . But for OS, If my PC is loaded with OSs other than window, I will feel the inconvenience immediately, because window is the only OS I am
familar with and has no intention to switch to other OSs in the near future as long as
the performance / price is reasonable and affordable to me. Think about that , when I was in school, I used window OS, when I work , I used window, I am very good and feel comfortable at window , can anyone give me a single reason that I should switch to other OSs which I am not familar with and will take me a lot of time to learn ?
I never heard of Linux or solaries till I saw the names on this thread, but I still do not know what they are , and never think of try these OSs at all, since I am very comfortable with my window OS. By natural, when I buy my next new PC, I will
still choose window as my OS, because I have used this OS for a long time and am
pretty comfortable with it. If any hardware vendors do not offer PCs with window
OS, then I will buy my new PC from the other vendors who offer PCs with window.

The Hardware vendors , like CPQ, HWP, DELL ..all know that , so they all load their
hardwares with window OS. So , who to blame ? THE CONSUMERS SHOULD BE BLAMED. The DOJ seemed to not understand this , and it is trying over and over again to hurt the consumers and help Microsoft's competitors.

Call up Dell and tell them you want Linux on your laptop ...

The Non-Refundable Refund
by Chris Oakes

Microsoft may be colluding with PC makers to make Windows refunds impossible, or near impossible. At least that's what a number of consumers are saying who have tried to get their refunds. And some lawyers are beginning to agree.

"Prosecutors in a class-action suit could probably make a reasonable case that there is collusion between [PC] manufacturers and Microsoft," said attorney Erwin Shustak. Shustak weighed in after learning of a grassroots movement that is setting out to test the end-user refund (EULA) that Microsoft promises with its Windows operating system.

A June 1998 survey of 12 PC manufacturers by then University of California Los Angeles undergrad David Chun found that no manufacturer would provide a customer with refunds if Windows was returned following a sale.

"None would offer a discount if I returned Windows and asked for a refund," Chun reported in his survey. He queried sales representatives at companies including Gateway, Dell, Micron, IBM, Packard Bell,
Hewlett-Packard, Toshiba, NEC, and Sony.

It appears that consumers are harmed when they are forced to pay for a poor operating system that they don't want. Is Microsoft a monopoly? Nothing wrong with being a monopoly. I just want a choice of operating systems from Dell.
