Anybody got an opinion on how to view Adaptec--the company and its stock price--in a historical context?

-- Is it the same company it was 52 weeks ago? SCSI is still its core business but without its satellite solutions group, its storage solutions group, its fiber channel group, its PTS operation, its CEO, its CFO, its Ridge acquisition, and its Symbios venture (all gone since the summer), it seems a much different operation.

-- In looking for a breakout point, does one go back to its all-time high of around $54/share about 15 months ago? It would seem some price much lower would represent that point at this stage. After next week, Adaptec's 52-week high will drop from about 39 1/2 to somewhere around 25-26 (and that was on very low volume in March 1998.) The trading high since 30 April (after the second straight earnings disappointment) has not exceeded $20/share and the range in the last six weeks has been $16-$19. Anyone reading Adaptec's chart who can give an opinion on what appears to be happening? Are institutions buying back in? What should we be looking for in the run up to the earnings report?

-- Assuming earnings at least meet expectations this quarter, what should that tell us about Adaptec? Sure sign of a recovery? Or do we need to see 2-3 sequentially rising earnings reports to make that judgment?
