Thanks for the article, John. There is a lot I could comment on but I'll limit my comments to this passage:

[quote begin]
Sun is preparing for computing to spread to consumer appliances such as
phones, digital assistants and televisions that will access the wealth of
information on the Internet.
[quote end]

I can not comment on cable companies but I think Primestar is preparing for television computing [and possibly phone]. I just got Primestar so my box, made by General Instrument, is the latest model, 301D. On the back of the Primestar box are three input connections currently unusable: 1. remote input ("reserved for future use"); 2. aux data ("... for data subscription services such as stock quotes, etc."); and 3. HS data ("... reserved for future use.").

For people who do not have Primestar, besides being connected to the dish, the box is connected to a phone line. Right now Primestar 'calls-in' to the box during early hours to check things. The phone line also enables one to order pay-for-view movies.

So, Primestar seems to be positioning it to offer its customers the very types of things SUNW wants to position itself to get a slice of in the consumer market.

Happy New Year, John!
