Doug I had a similar thing happen to me some time ago.
This is how I was told to fix it.

Message 5431808

I am new myself but I would suggest the following: Right click start button/then left click explorer/go to windows file and click start menu/then click programs/finally you can click on the "start up" file, this is where you put things to start up when you boot.It may be the program and not a copy so just drag it to another file and use the move command so you won't loose it and see what happens........word of advise I am new also.

"I have six icons in the bottom right hand corner plus Works that starts up on boot. What is the name of this area?"

it's called the system tray. program name is systray. if i'm hearing your problem right, you can click ctrl+alt+del once and you'll get the close program box. there you may find the icon that is in your system tray that you wish to close. you can then follow directions in the close program box, which include selecting the program and clicking end task. it has been my experience that sometimes you must do this twice (and then yet another box pops up asking if you want to shut the program down). then, if the icon is still there, sometimes all it takes is sweeping your mouse arrow across the icon to make it adios.

i agree with all the folks who are directing you to the start up folder, however you've indicated that these suggestions have not worked for you.

one more suggestion, doug. you might try right-clicking on the icon and selecting close, or disable or whatever the shut-off option is. upon doing this, sometimes you are then given a choice as to whether or not you want the program to start next time windows is started, and you can say no.

i sure hope you get your problem resolved. good luck. and let us know what finally worked. :)

Doug,

you indicated that you "deleted" the program. Nowadays you're supposed to "uninstall", using either the uninstall utility that will be found in the program's folder, or using "Add/Remove Programs"\"Install/Uninstall", which is found in "Control Panel". If the program is listed there, that should fix the problem.

Also, check in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup to see if the icon is there. Alternatively, just use the Windows "Find" feature: search for "startup" and when it finds it, double click...

"Double checked the start menu. It has three programs, I have six icons in the bottom right hand corner plus Works that starts up on boot. What is the name of this area?"

Doug, what are the three programs in the startup folder? Do you know what they are? As far as I know, for a program to run on boot, it has to be in this startup folder.

(PS you might want to make sure you're looking at the StartUp folder, not just the Start Menu folder. Open your Start Menu folder, open the Programs folder, then there should be a folder called StartUp. Since you called it "Start Menu" maybe you haven't gone to the right place. Sorry if you have.)

It is possible for one program to open multiple icons. I remember a virus scan program I used to run would leave multiple icons.

The bar you're talking about is called the Taskbar, I believe. Don't know if the area you're talking about with the little icons is called something different or not.
