US$970 million market demand(a)
Bellcore today announced that they have adopted Amteva's Unified Messaging Plus(TM) as a core technology for providing IP-based messaging solutions to their customers. Bellcore, a leading provider of communications software, engineering and consulting services, has included Amteva's Unified Messaging Plus in its unified messaging solution, which is currently available to competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs), Internet service providers (ISPs) and global enterprises. Amteva's Unified Messaging Plus is the only carrier-class and extended capacity IP-based messaging solution available today. It allows a user with a telephone or computer to access and deliver voice-mail, fax mail and e-mail messages from a single mailbox through the Internet Protocol (IP) network. Unified Messaging Plus is comprised of four components; Voice Messaging over IP, Fax Messaging over IP, E-mail Messaging and Single Number Reach. Its power is based on a scalable, protocol-driven, standards-based architecture that is readily equipped for deployments on top of existing IP-based network infrastructures. The Bellcore Unified Messaging solution, currently being trialed by customers of Manitoba Telecom Services, enables individuals to direct all voice, e-mail, pages and fax messages to one central location, enabling users to manage both their internal and external communications more efficiently. It allows a sender's medium of choice to be different from the recipient's medium of retrieving the message since voice and data transmissions are captured and stored in a single mailbox. "Amteva's Unified Messaging Plus product is part of Bellcore's Unified Messaging Solution, which harnesses the power of the IP network for a wide variety of messaging applications and scales to handle millions of users," said Richard Tarabour, Bellcore's Director of Advanced Services Planning and Engineering. "In addition, its open architecture and standards-based approach allows CLECs, ILECs, ISPs and global enterprises to deploy one of the most sought-after value-added services on top of existing network topologies." According to Dean Dodrill, President and CEO of Amteva, "We're pleased that Bellcore, a company at the forefront of the latest communications technologies, has adopted our software. The fact that Bellcore, a worldwide organization known for its communications solutions and industry knowledge, positions Unified Messaging Plus as a key part of their overall messaging strategy speaks volumes about the market's readiness for powerful unified messaging solutions. We believe this continues to validate our position as the premier provider in IP-based messaging."
Amteva's Standards-Based Framework
Amteva's Unified Messaging Plus is built on a distributed, object-based framework with native support for all major industry standards such as LDAP, IMAP4, SMTP/MIME, VPIM and HTTP/HTML, and supports centralized SNMP management and web-based administration. Amteva's open, scalable and extensible architecture means that once it is installed it can support virtually any type of value-added messaging application that the future may demand. This approach helps drive down the cost of implementing new services, provides a foundation for growth in the millennium, improves time to market for introducing new applications, and provides a comprehensive operations, administration, maintenance and provisioning capability.
About Bellcore's Unified Messaging Solution
Bellcore's Unified Messaging Solution simplifies message retrieval by providing a single access point for an individual's messages wherever they are. The user manages, stores and retrieves messages based on conditions they themselves set. Users can set their systems so that they are notified about certain messages right away. Access to messages is done in various ways:
o From a desktop or portable computer either on the network or through a dial-up connection to the office: The user's e-mail inbox will show all e-mail, voice mail, pages and faxes. Double clicking on the message will bring up an e-mail window, a voice mail player with tape-recorder buttons or a fax viewer.
o By telephone: E-mails and fax headers can be forwarded to a telephone and heard using text-to-speech conversion software.
o By pager: The subject, origin, and limited text in the messages can be forwarded onto a pager, so the user can be alerted to important messages.
Unified Messaging is particularly suited to people whose work is non-routine and unstructured, for example, "road warriors" who need to be able to access and respond to all message types wherever they are using the most convenient communication device available to them at that particular time.
