I thought that the Banshee did very well in it's introduction. It won a major OEM contract at Gateway and has been doing very well in retail.

Yes, it would've been better to win a few more big OEM's, but 3Dfx has the opportunity to show it can support a large OEM (and several smaller ones) without facing explosive growth ot the same time.

The production capacity issue was based more on 3Dfx's conservative estimates of how many chips would be bought. When I talked to them, they said that it was more a matter of lead time for their orders, not a basic shotfall.

BTW - For all the "tempest in a teapot" reaction that the glide wrapper story received, Brian Hook came out on the side of 3Dfx:

As much as we can say now that Voodoo3 will be successful, it doesn't mean anything if 3Dfx can't deliver want the OEMs want. Already the industry is grumbling about the lack of 32bit color and z-buffering.

The industry? You mean game developers right? They've been baggin' ATI for years to no effect. This argument doesn't hold water. As OEMs can put 32 bit in their spec sheet (which they can), they don't care.

ATI has excelled at giving the OEMs what they want when they want it in the quantities desired for a low price.

Bingo. Given the boxmakers "give a crap" attitude about 3d other than price/benchmark performance levels I think we can expect OEMs to care less about 32bit 3d rendering and more about reliablity. If OEMs were as technology sensative as you make them out to be, ATI would be bankrupt...

ATI's success speaks volumes about what kind of products OEMs are looking for and, IMHO, 3dfx should not waste a dollar more for something OEMs care nothing about. The added cost may make the difference between a deal won or lost. Contrary to popular belief, the TNT has had nowhere near the OEM penetration levels of the Riva128. I think there is a reason for this and I would welcome all comments as to why this is the case.
