Nihil, Most of the cellulose mass is also polysaccharides and once broken down be heat/acid/enzymes becomes a metabolite for yeast. Currently work goes on to digest assorted biomass(sugar cane waste, barks, straws, leaves etc) to a saccaride base that can used as a feedstock to make ethanol and other things like acetone etc. One fine day alcohol may well get cheaper that gasoline as these efforts mature.

re: "ethanol is in terms of pollutants per mile much worse than many of approaches (electric car)"

Many people tout the electric car as being so pollution friendly, but I've always wondered if they've factored in the pollution caused by the electric power plant in generating the power to drive the car. Do you know of any research on this point?
