Lorrie, There really is a great divide in this country. I respect your logic. Our two posts illustrate clearly what the Clinton issue is all about.

<<Is it the vow or some other, more intangible sense of a lifelong bond that you feel...?>>

Maybe it is one thing to some people and something else to others. My understanding is that Bill and Hillary made vows. When vows are made it is your word before your community of witnesses, the state, and before your God that you will hold the contents of these words as a sacred trust, as well as a contract.

<<I think that all contracts are somewhat negotiable and that to me includes a "marriage" contract...these things must remain private...if the state sanctioned institutions and laws are intrusive, we skirt the "rule of law" at our own peril. >>

Private?? In what sense is a marriage in which all significant members of the community are asked to witness, honor and celebrate the event, private? The essence of the whole event is to publicize the act for everyone so that the the marriage will be respected by the community as something that should not be challenged.

Is the rule of law being skirted or are you rethinking things only in terms that support your argument for your Bubba?
