From Bloomberg news:

"During iMac's first 139 days, an iMac was sold every 15 seconds of every minute of every hour of every day of every week." (quote from Steve Jobs)

Valid point Alomex but maybe the benefit resides in a "OS emulator"

>> " A SEGA emulator for PCs has been around for a while. I don't see why this announcement is so momentous.. " <<

That is true unless more pops up at CES Vegas (tomorrow).

However a licensed Windows (full OS) emulator at arms length from MSFT might prove VERY valuable - nes pas ?

A SEGA emulator for PCs has been around for a while. I don't see why this announcement is so
momentous..

Right, and if you go to emulation.net, you will see 2 dozen types of emulators for the Mac, including SNES and Sega.

Playstation is important, though, because
1) It has the highest volume and number of games in the current market
2) It is a current machine, not a generation back.

OK, let me give you a few reasons...

1. The PlayStation is the most popular console game system currently out there, with hundreds of titles available. Most are priced under $30 to boot, much cheaper than the N64 cartridges. Old Sega games just aren't where the market is right now.

2. It solidifies Apple's commitment to the Mac gaming market even further, and if Apple wants to sell boxes, Steve finally realized that games are a very important consideration. Studies have shown that game playing is one of the primary uses of home computers -- anyone who has kids can attest to this.

3. This is an official (licensed?) product release from a major Macintosh company (Connectix), not some hacked together emulator found at a web site. This is a product you can buy on store shelves, and you have the backing of a solid company for regular updates. You won't have to hunt for the illegal ROM files to play your PlayStation games either, like you currently do with other console emulators -- you simply pop in your PlayStation CD-ROM and away you go.

---

These are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Make no mistake, this is a major announcement for the Macintosh. Oddly enough, the rumor sites reported that this PlayStation emulator was rumored to be in development for the launch of the iMac, so perhaps it just wasn't ready in time.

The only thing Apple could do better is to bundle a copy of the PlayStation emulator with every iMac sold.
