GM,
<<I wonder who makes the 260 MB drive>>

I wondered that myself. Hitachi, of course, makes disk drives, but 260 MB is pretty lame in any app, let alone one for "multimedia image processing". Has to be another sterling example of work from the esteemed 4th estate.

GM,

Now here is a real multi media drive, also introduced at the MacWorld show: Best, Stitch

Castlewood Joins Apple in Its Commitment to IEEE 1394 FireWire -- Introduces ORB 2.2 GB FireWire Storage Device At MacWorld Expo -- San Francisco

January 6, 1999
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE) via NewsEdge Corporation -- Jan. 5, 1999--Today at the MacWorld Expo -- San Francisco, Castlewood Systems, maker of the high performance ORB removable storage device, announced its new state-of-the-art ORB 2.2 GB with IEEE 1394 FireWire interface.

The ORB, which will be showcased at MacWorld Expo -- San Francisco, will offer Mac users the latest technology performance at phenomenal speeds with exceptional storage capabilities.

FireWire, an Apple-developed high-speed cross-platform interface technology, is a way to transfer huge amounts of real-time multimedia data and large files from consumer electronic devices directly into Macs and PCs. FireWire combines all of the advantages of a multi-platform standard, improves transfer speeds at a decreased cost, and increases compatibility with a greater number of available peripherals such as digital camcorders, music systems or scanners. The ORB, containing magneto-resistive (MR) head technology and 2.2 GB capacity, provides more data storage at a faster speed than any removable media product available today.

"The ORB 2.2 GB removable FireWire drive is terrific for use with Apple's new Power Macintosh G3 systems with built-in FireWire," said Mick Mountz, Apple's Power Macintosh Product Manager. "Castlewood's ORB FireWire drive ensures that Macintosh customers will have ample data storage for the growing number of digital-based audio and video devices they attach to their Macs. "

"Our commitment with Apple to the promotion of FireWire-enabled devices is an excellent opportunity to unite two exceptional technologies sure to benefit consumers as well as correspond to our vision of digital convergence," said Martin Fishman, vice president of worldwide sales and marketing of Castlewood Systems. "The ORB 2.2 GB performance takes advantage of the high-speed breakthrough of the FireWire interface, allowing data to be transferred at 100, 200, and 400 Mbps, and anticipates tomorrow's needs of consumers and graphic artists and other professionals today."

With many FireWire-ready products being released such as digital VCRs, home entertainment systems, music synthesizers and scanners, and many more to come, the reality of an ORB 2.2 GB with a FireWire interface is ideal news for current and future Mac users.

Current ORB 2.2 GB drive retail packages, including one 2.2 GB ORB disk and cable and power supply have a suggested retail price of $199.95, about 70 percent lower than comparable packages. Separate 2.2 GB ORB media have a suggested retail price of just $29.95, about 80 percent less than the cost of competitive disks, driving the cost of storage to a new low of $0.0138 per megabyte. Castlewood Systems anticipates shipping its 2.2 GB ORB with FireWire interface solutions in the second quarter of 1999.

The new ORB 2.2 GB with FireWire interface complements Apple's newest G3 Systems launching FireWire on the motherboard. The ORB FireWire joins the internal and external models with the following interfaces: external SCSI, external parallel port, internal SCSI, internal EIDE, and external USB.

Castlewood Systems designs and manufactures high performance removable media drives using the latest magneto-resistive (MR) head technology, offering computer users the solution to storage for the next millennium. ORB offers consumers the largest capacity, highest reliability and lowest cost of any product in its class. Additional information about Castlewood and its products, partners, technology and distribution can be found on the World Wide Web at castlewood.com.
