Like William Wallace in "Brave Heart", we'll go down with honor but win the hearts and souls again in the longer term when the electorate figures it out.

Well thats a fine attitude to have but that wasnt the cry I heard from the republicans on this thread on November 11. The republicans have a real problem with this in this decade. You need to decide if you want to win elections (I understand you dont - but what about other republicans) or make a moral stand. Example the guy in California who lost MISERABLY for governor, (even though Ca tends toward republican govs and hasnt had a Dem since the moonbeam era) decides to state that hes anti-abortion. Well thats it, hes lost it right there. And he knows this, so whats the point of running? Do the republicans think that if they chant their biblical themes over and over and over that maybe Jesus will show up at the polls? Dole (Bob) and Quayle are examples of this. Those two are not winnable candidates. But the repbublicans keep standing behind people like this, just because there is either nobody else or these guys have been around a while or who knows why. Same thing with this impeachment - its stupid, but yes you will have taken a stand. Nobody is going to remember what that stand was in 2004 when the republcans have no incumbents etc and they will have to work for another 40 years to finally get another majority.

I would much much much rather lose on the basis of honor, principle, integrity and high regard
If the Reps go down, it will only be themselves who think they did the honorable thing. To most the Reps will appear shallow and vindictive with some deep seated hate complex which causes their undoing. Like a twisted Don Quixote the Reps see one thing in their hearts while the world see's something else in their actions.
