Mylex has a superior firmware base, and that is where the action is in RAID. The Intellectual Property in RAID is in the firmware (software). Typically, a RAID firmware base consist tens of thousands of lines of code. RAID is just not hooking a group of drives together. Its maintaining fault tolerance, on line manageability, data availability and many other features.

Then you have to look at the market for host base raid (the RAID card in the server) vs. (an external RAID box with the RAID controller in the box). There
are other RAID vendors which have four or even five SCSI channels
per RAID adapter. However, as you go beyond two SCSI channels, the number of cables and drives in one server becomes tough to manage. For large number of drives, it makes sense to go to an external enclosure and a fibre channel solution. That is the business that Adaptec sold off.

As far as markets, for host based RAID, that is primarily focused low end
servers and workstations. That is where Adaptec has played well, but Mylex is now a competitor. Adaptec has an inexpensive solution, however Mylex's
appears to be winning due its enhanced performance and manageability
from its software and embedded microprocessor design.

At the high end, you want to go an external box, using Fibre Channel
connectivity. Mylex has an excellent solution there, where as Adaptec does not (they sold off their Fibre Channel and bridge controller groups).

I still hold both Adaptec and Mylex. I believe they will both do well
in the next few months.
