Nokia to provide GSM expansion in China with USD 280 million contract Just when you thought it couldn't get better..... (January 8, 1999) - Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunications Ltd and Beijing Nokia Hang Xing Telecommunications Systems Ltd - two of Nokia's joint ventures in China - have signed an agreement valued at USD 280 million for a further expansion of the Henan PTA GSM network. With this expansion, the Henan PTA network will provide capacity for up to four million subscribers in one of the largest provinces in China. Nokia will supply GSM 1800 and GSM 900 equipment including its mobile switching centres, home location registers, base station controllers and base stations. Nokia will also supply customer services including installation, network planning, technical support and training. "In October 1998, Henan PTA celebrated a milestone figure of one million subscribers. This contract is a project for supporting subscriber development during 1999 and 2000," said Mr. Chu Junguo, Director, Henan PTA. "Nokia continues to be the main supplier to the Henan PTA network, in a successful partnership which began in 1995," says Folke Ahlbäck, Senior Vice President, Nokia, China. "With this agreement Henan PTA will be able to launch new services such as prepaid services and Chinese short message services during this year."
