I made a lot of money a long time ago by holding a large block of Adams Express on margin, when it was at a discount of about 25%, and at a very low point in the market. It's a survivor of the investment trusts that go back to the 1920s.

But right now it has as much market risk as anything else.

When the time comes, other good ones are Tricontinental and Baker Fentress and Source Capital.

But believe it or not, even these CEFs can be risky. A fine old operation, the Madison Fund, was got control of by some real sharks in the later 1970s, I think it was, who turned it into an oil-speculation vehicle and destroyed it.
