lkj,

I think that you are going to see alot of players out in the market and the barrier to entry seems negligible. For SNDK longs the issue is whether CF or MMC will become a recording standard like the reel-to-reel, 8 track tape, cassette tape and CD before them.

The maximum capacity of SmartMedia and MMC must be comparable and I trust that production costs will be nearly the same.

IBD article today on the "boom and bust"cycle of the storage industry. SanDisk is mentioned twice in this brief piece which offered a broad view of storage technology. Companies highlighted (?) in the tabular summary included:

Network Appliance
EMC
Overland Data
C Cube
Maxtor
Rimage
Dataram
Microchip Tech
Storage Technology
Smart Modular Tech
Advanced Digital Info
Drexler Technology
Procom Technology
Intevac
Mylex
Komag
Seagate
SanDisk
Quantum
Iomega
HMT Technology
Hutchinson Technology
Tead Rite
Western Digital
Imation

All of these companies have had improved relative strength though many (like SanDisk) have disappointing EPS rankings. The companies are listed by overall IBD merits (EPS and recent price strength), not market cap or total revenues or industry niche.
