What I infer is Yikes the celeron combo is just as fast & $500 cheaper! At the same time, it seems unlikely that Intel would shoot themselves in the foot to that extent (why would anyone buy the pentium 450?). Any comments would be appreciated.

Most people that want a 450 machine will buy the PII 450. The overclocking options do not exist in the standard channels. IBM, DELL, Compaq, Micron, Gateway...are not going to sell you an overclocked machine. You will not find government and corporate entities buying overclocked machines.

Who knows why Intel provided the option. Was it a mistake or did they let it through with tacit knowledge? They have taken back a share of the low end PC market. A lot of gamers and low end speed freaks that were buying AMD chips are now buying the Celeron. How can you pass up the deal? What the heck..buy two. If you burn one out replace it with the back up and you are still ahead of the curve. Chances are you will not burn it out. The ABIT mobo gives you the option to lower the speed without cracking the case.

>>But you probably have someone good as you have dealt with them before

Actually, I'm still in the studying stage and have never bought on-line before (except that the other day I ordered "Lost & Found" from Power Quest--a utility that retrieves erased data on your hard-drive. Note to Zeuspaul: The dos 6.2 program "unformat" only works if your drive is FAT16--it wouldn't "see" my drive. Thanks for the referral to Power Quest!).

>>why would anyone buy the pentioum 450?

I think Zeuspaul's answer sums it pretty well, but I'm still curious whether there are any real performance advantages of the "genuine" PII over the overclocked Celeron. I'll start by scanning the various reviews on the tech sites.
