Traveling to many places is wonderful, as is studying many subjects. Both are limiting as well. Specialization - the mastery of one subject or one place - provides a necessary perspective. Until you master one field it is difficult to know how much you do not know about the others, and this makes it difficult to achieve the humility that marks the truly superior, those whose accomplishments are tangible, not merely audible.

Have you ever specialized? In what?

While most Americans live vicariously through their TV sets and movies, I rarely watch TV -- I found long ago that it gets in the way of real life.

I do not watch TV at all. But having both traveled a great deal and lived for an extended period in a foreign country, I would have to say that travel as it is usually conducted has a great deal in common with TV - the experience is one of surface, not substance.

As for Galt, he has no peers.

I had a feeling you would say this. But on what is it based? Has he published anything? Is there anywhere other than SI where he has made any impact?
