Steve,

Television has done much to "zombify" the greater portion of the USA. News television has achieved much in the way of programming a significant number of people how to think and what to think.

My father once said, "You do not really begin to gain wisdom until you know what you don't know." This mystified me for awhile in my teen years until it finally dawned on me that he meant: when you become aware of all the knowledge that exists that you have not even begun to scratch the surface of, then, THEN you will begin to become wise.

Finally, specialization is fine and certainly necessary, but do not discount the man with broad knowledge, just because it is broad does not mean it is shallow, plus a Renaissance man has the distinct advantage in today's society of combining knowledge from diverse fields to synthesize new creations which could not be accomplished by those that stagnate in the tunnel vision of a highly specialized field.
