Since when has it become incumbent on a software company to
nurture it's competitors? (I'm assuming your post was written
with sarcasm).

I'm in the software business myself, and believe me, our competitors
are ready to steal our customers, and they won't cry any tears of sorrow if we went out of business. Microsoft has built themselves a powerhouse, and they play bare knuckles business. So What? Build a better product, and somehow be more clever. I don't see Scott McNeally and Larry Ellison or Orrin Hatch living under a bridge in a cardboard box because Microsoft stole their potential to succeed.
