Vandenberg is licensed only to launch sats into a polar orbit, by launching south -- that way they do not fly over populated areas. This is why I* can use that launch base. But G* has a final orbit of only 52 deg. Therefore, to launch out of Vandenberg, G* has to launch south, and then do a sharp left hand turn when they get enough altitude. This is what the extra solids are for. This type of flight profile has never before been attempted, and anyone with an orbit mechanics background is awestruck when they hear about the details.

Vman: Thanks for the response. Just tickling the keys for more info.

The Vandenberg launches are polar orbits so more booster punch is required for the same orbit. The large increase over Cape launch requirements (4 to 9 boosters) made me hope for another sat or two on the bird.

Ariane and Soyuz are in bed together, maybe that will drop the price some, I know that is there intent. Ariane only made 1% profit last year. I dont think Soyuz would be ready to go in Kourou in time to help us with the first constellation. (ie 1999, especially given the rapid response of the consortium to date!)

I hope the financing gets done soon. The declassified Chinese report will hit the streets soon and that will continue the negative news for Loral. Loral has managed to beat back the bad news and advance the stock to close to pre-Zenit levels, but we need some positive hardware results sometime.

Perhaps the three ring circus will distract the senators enough that the report will be forgotten (as far as making a big stink about) From what I have read so far, it appears that the report will make it clear that the game has gone on so long that no party will be able to stand up and bash the other, both are knee deep in 'fault' for allowing this to go on, or at least not acknowledging it.

One positive thing I have noticed of late, Chinese press releases and quotes of the Chinese officials are no longer in such broken English as to be off base with the intent of the comment. I can remember press releases of past times which were comical for there strange translations.

Here is to continued street awakening to Loral.
