Actually, the lack of SCSI and inclusion of Firewire is more a matter
of market strategy than saving $20-30, IMO. If Apple went to USB
on iMac but kept serial/ADB, I am sure the USB vendors would have
been much slower in providing new product. Similarly, I suspect that
after successfully introducing USB with iMac by this strategy, Apple
is gambling they can bootstrap adoption of Firewire by eliminating
SCSI as standard. If they left SCSI on, one might reason, there would
be less incentive for peripheral vendors to market Firewire sooner
rather than later, hence slow adoption, and possibly never obtain
critical mass. In my scenario, we should applaud Apple for taking
the risk in the marketplace. Few PC box manufacturers would or could
do the same thing. JMO.
