Actually, the lack of SCSI and inclusion of Firewire is more a matter of market strategy than saving $20-30, IMO. If Apple went to USB on iMac but kept serial/ADB, I am sure the USB vendors would have been much slower in providing new product.

So what if they were slower at making USB devices? If you have serial and ADB then they can be slow. USB would have to compete on the merits of the technology and not cause its the only thing available. Is that so wrong?

If Apple made its money by growing a peripheral market for other companies then your argument would make sense. But since they make money selling computers that people want to buy, it doesn't. The bottom line is this is Steve Jobs being Steve Jobs. The guy just cannot stand it if he's not pushing the envelope, and he gets his kicks from having things happen HIS WAY. If it lowers the cost of the machine to remove serial and SCSI(which it does) then that is just a collateral benefit to him.

This is just my impression of SJ of course. I don't know him personally!
