Horror stories from the NT "cutting edge" The following is from a friend of mine who is a network administrator and his experiences with installing NT into his network. "Well, after being up for a day, all seems fine, I reboot, and suddenly, I can't boot. VERY similar to what you experienced. I did all sorts of things, and finally gave up, the partition table was corrupted! So, I repartition, makeing the thing NTFS since I could use the practice and experience with it. So, after spending an hour just getting the BIOS to recognize the damn hard drive again, I find that the Windows NT disk is bootable(would have saved me an hour of copying the damn files and makeing floppies). Ok, so, I install it, then try to install the Matrox drivers. Ok, next problem, Install them, says the drivers are installed, reboot, and guess what, the system finds a VGA compatable vid card, and not the Matrox. Try this several times, try to change it, and it doesn't show up in the list, but is listed in the devices section of control pannel. So, not seeing any other possibility, I figure I will download service pack 4, which may fix the problem. Well, the thing wants IE 3.0 or better, and NT server came with IE 2. So, try to download IE 4, but it tells me I need service pack 3 to install IE 4. So, here I am, downloading service pack 3, so I can upgrade IE, so I can download and install service pack 4. What a complete piece of CRAP! If I were an MIS director, I'd sue Microsoft over the waste of time and resources this is costing my company! Now, Service pack 4 is a superset of 3, so ALL the time it takes to download 3 is wasted, but needed in order to install IE 4. This blows chunks!" Notethe comment: IF I WERE AN MIS DIRECTOR I'D SUE MICROSOFT OVER THE WASTE OF TIME AND RESOURCES THIS IS COSTING MY COMPANY.
