Rock, I doubt it. Do longs have to sell when the symbol changes?

No changing its symbol does not mean anything..what you see is probably a hypey press release indicating they are going into a new business or they are removing a qualifying letter..or moving to a higher liting

Covering due to a symbol change is not required. SCTR changed to XMIT without any problems for me holding a short. You may have to call your broker to trade it though, they are often lax about changing the symbol on their systems in a timely fashion.
