There are indications that might tend to support your statement:

- news releases are issued through a variety of services (e.g. most thru CCN, the major Dec. 9 one via CNW, the options one yesterday via ISDN)

- no mention of plans for the smart card terminal in releases prior to the Dec 22 release

- the Dec. 22 release itself issued when most investors minds are elsewhere.

At any rate I am very pleased with a low profile approach, if indeed it is planned to be that way. I would prefer management to focus on operating and building the business rather than spend effort in satisfying investor and analyst queries. If you're good, your results will speak for themselves and be reflected in the stock price eventually.

It seems to have worked for them so far!

Nortel Networks To Accelerate Streamlining of Business Processes Company to
Realize Significant Improvement in Time to Market and Operational Efficiencies

TORONTO, Jan. 13 /CNW/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE: NT/TSE: NTL) announced
today the acceleration of its operations strategy designed to better meet the
rapidly changing needs and values of its customers worldwide. The strategy
will simplify and streamline Nortel Networks' businesses and operations
processes, including the company's order-entry and fulfillment, delivery,
service and manufacturing systems over the next three years.

A key element of the company's strategy is the transition from vertical
integration -making and assembling most of its products and systems- to
virtual integration, acting as a systems house linking customers, design
centers, internal production centers, contract manufacturers and other
resources.

The operations strategy will involve plant divestitures, manufacturing
rationalization, greater reliance on outsourcing and redeployment of
employees.

coming to an end as the new economics of networking take hold. The explosive growth
of the Internet and data networking is accelerating the shift in Nortel Networks'
product mix from hardware to software.
