IBM after NOVL?

$4 billion isn't enough to go after either one.

Hello!

There's been strong rumor that points towards IBM buying SUNW. Somehow that wouldn't be the best thing for NOVL in that IBM has it's own directory project underway and Java would now fall into Big Blue's sphere of influence.

Somehow I could see a stronger relationship between NOVL and IBM if they were to buy SUNW working towards a new JAVA world. Let's remember that IBM is the largest supporter of Java outside of SUNW and Schmidt knows that.

Although gobbling up NOVL would be nice I don't see how that would shake out? Here are some thoughts:

a) What would happen with GroupWise with Lotus (Notes) in IBM's corner?

b) NDS could jump start IBM's entry into the directory market but it would make more sense for IBM to go after SUNW, who is now getting Netscape's server software in the AOL/Netscape Deal (including Netscape Directory Server considered NDS' only real competition in terms of maturity and scalability).

c) ZEN Works and ManageWise meets Tivoli? Could make for an ugly stepchild but this would hinge on the NDS future under IBM's control which I don't see as promising.

d) NOVL buyout would be cheaper, easier and faster for many Gov't agencies to swallow. Another aspect of this play is that MSFT is leary of SUNW and when you couple that with IBM's history with MSFT, it makes for a very attractive deal. Don't kid yourself if you think IBM's top people have not dreamed of getting even with Redmond :)

There's more to think about here. IBM has been working closely with SUNW in the OS space. They have a product called JavaOS (http://www.ibm.com/java/javaos/) which is a java-based OS that would use IBM's big iron systems (AS/400 etc) in the back office.

The JavaOS also works in these ways:

IBM's eNetwork Host On-Demand
Provides TN3270 and TN5250 emulation to access enterprise data

GraphOn's GO-Joe
Provides access to UNIX® and X Window applications

Citrix System's ICA Client
Provides access to Microsoft Windows 32-bit applications

In the future, IBM plans to make available additional applications, including Lotus's eSuite.

IBM also has developed a leading Java Rapid Application Development Tool called VisualAge....the more I write this, the more it seems as if IBM will buy out SUNW.

Interesting. I'll have to dig alittle deeper on this one folks :)
