My opinion of the Lucent/Ascend merger.....

Lucent, with merger has strengths in FR/ATM/WAN market with some overlap in the ISP area.

Lucent IMO, bought ascend for one reason, and one reason only...
they are operating in the past and Cisco is operating in the future. Time is money and thus Lucent had no choice but to spend big bucks to acquire Ascend.

Now, IMO, they have some tough decisions to make. With all of their recent acquisitions, they have a lot of product overlap.

Which products do they stay with and what goes? And how do they deal with the product teams and talent whose products are canceled?

And, what about the top Ascend folks who have stock options, just waiting for this merger....Can Lucent really expect to keep them?

Just some food for thought...
