Hi Barb,

"But why should a margin account be required for shorting?"

My guess is because brokers say so. <g>

I suspect you hit the nail on the head here.

Do you recall the day that ENMD gapped up from 12 to 83? It closed in the 50s, more than 4x the previous close. How can you guarantee that you'll have enough cash to cover an extreme situation like that?

The same way in a cash account as in a margin account. Either enough cash is already there, in which case it's not an issue, or a margin call happens.

And if a margin call happens, either you're able to come up with the funds or you're not, regardless of the types of accounts (cash or margin) you might have open at your brokerage. And if you can't come up with the funds, your broker is SOL and you're in a heap of trouble.

- Daniel

Mama and Thread - Help Please! Re. Shorting against restricted BB shares. I am long 125k restricted shares in a BB company. Shares can be traded in a 'brokered transaction' Oct 1999. I am looking for ways to short sell against these shares as soon as possible. I would appreciate any advice.

Regards, Dave
