I have had no problems with Dreyfus Brokerage Services at www.tradepbs.com
After the Oct 97 fiasco they upgraded their system so well that I can never make out when its a heavy volume day. Limit, Market orders (Equity AND Options) are all $15. Market orders execute in less than 5 seconds.

Well,

Here is the best I've seen. But it is not the cheapest, unless you do a lot of trades. You can even get a private frame relay connection directly into their server.

abwatley.com

A good reliable and less expensive firm is

dljdirect.com

DO NOT USE DATEK, ETRADE or the heavy discounters. I think some of them trade against you - or your trades do not execute until after they can skim 1/16 point. Anyway, I've never had a limit order trade at the low for a day on them. I have had is on the two above.

I have been with Waterhouse for 5 years, only now discovering what assholes they are. I had the same problem with them on Friday when there WebBroker was down and phone lines busy. Also I found out to my dismay that their option quotes do not reflect the bid ask from the exchange where the trade may occur, so the quotes can be totally bizarre.

I am taking my business elsewhere. Does anybody use E-Schwab or know how they are?

I've used Brown & Co. for years and I really like them. brownco.com $5 a trade up to 1000 shares voice, automated phone, or internet. You can't beat the price and I've never had problems getting through. Caveat:
I am an investor and not a trader so I can't speak to day trades and such.

John, You might try Accutrade at accutrade.com. I don't trade as much as some here, but I'm happy with their service. $29.95 for any trade up to 1000 sh. You might ask Mark Duper how he likes them.
There's an on line rating of all brokers from deep discount to full service I'll try and find for you.

Broker ratings
smartmoney.com
Doesn't rate reliability but I think all are unreliable.

List of online brokers
dir.yahoo.com

If you want reliability, my understanding is that you have to go with brokers that offer direct access to the markets like ABWatney or MBTrader. Check it out yourself since I don't have accounts at these place so I don't really have direct experience.

John et al,

Re : EVERYBODY I NEED HELP

>>After the Waterhouse SNAFU, where on Wednesday when I tried to call to buy ASND at the low stalled price, all i got was 'all lines are busy, call back later', then the system hung up leaving me with a dead line. I lost out on at least $10K - $12K dues to this Waterhouse incompetence.<<

You can do what I did.... Prior to the market open on Wednesday, I noticed from my real time quotes (DBC Signal) that many of the stocks were going to open substantially lower due to panic. Panic is the BEST time to buy. I use Schwab and placed several limit orders at just above where the stocks were trading at 15 minutes prior to open. Website ran fast, no problems, etc. This allowed me to make my buys and avoid the crowds and net slowness. If a person ends up buying 15 minutes AFTER the market opens on panic, why not just place the order BEFORE it opens and guarantee getting your price???
