I was attempting to sythesize yours and Spots approaches although we have talked around this idea before.

The more I think about it the more I believe Spot's and I are talking about two different issues.

I agree with Spot's that working in the NT envelope is the way to go when it makes sense.

Spots was not addressing backing up the utility drive. He kinda passed over the issue as it is not pressing at this point in time.

I have no knowledge of NT drive utilities and how they compare to Partition Magic. I did not know NT could resize and change FAT32 to FAT16 without data loss thus postponing the need for Partition Magic.

I tried to slip backing up the utility drive concept into Spot's design and confused the issues.

I think the only area of 'mild' disagreement is when to backup the utility drive. How is up in the air. If Drive Image becomes the backup utility for the KOT drive what are the logistics? Can one execute Drive Image and select the FAT16 partition on the second drive and save it to the NTFS drive? AND then execute Drive Image and restore the Image from the NTFS partition to the KOT drive?

My understanding is you cannot restore from the NTFS partition so you need a second FAT 16 partition somewhere.

I am not onboard without a backup option for the KOT. It is 'easy' to reinstall Win98 if the NT install does not go as planned. What if it does go as planned? Now you have more time invested in the installation and configuration of the KOT.

Restoring the KOT from the primary NT drive from a primary NT boot still makes the most sense to me. It can be done with Partition Magic and a hidden partition on the primary NT drive (based on my understanding,)as related in a previous post(a few days ago, not today). IMO the procedure is simple. It would require resizing the NT NTFS partition if it currently takes the entire drive? That means we are messing with the primary drive.

Practicing on the KOT made more sense to me. Once comfortable with the procedure then operate on the primary drive. I do not see the advantage in postponing backing up the KOT.
