Where is this article you refer to? As an alum of the University of Pennsylvania, I seriously doubt if "the University" wanted to stir up trouble. Articles are generally in the works for many months before they are published. Any mention of who funded the study would be relevant information to reveal. Universities obtain a lot of their research money from private industry. Disclosing the source should be done.
