I don't think the world is a better place with daytraders.

It is. You'll have to trust me on this, but it is. Anything that prevents market "massage" is a good thing.

The BAD thing is that people start day trading without understanding it, or for the wrong reason, and they lose their money and walk away and grumble.

It's not good for everyone. Not even close. But it is good for the market.

I appreciate the kind words. I once worked for an entrepreneur who talked about the miserable jobs his family had growing up and how he felt there must be a better way. He also told me that he thought it would be horrible to look back in retirement and wonder if he could have run a successful business if he had only tried. I try to keep this backwards perspective in mind.

The conclusion that I have reached is that there is nothing bad about earning money in this way. I had mentally compared day trading to playing poker professionally and while there are similarities, there are important differences. In addition, one must look at their entire life if they intend to assess the quality of their efforts.

All in all I think that I have found that I have no problem philosophically with day trading as long as I keep it in perspective. I think that some jobs provide more value to society, but many do not. I suppose that time will tell if it is right for me. I have found your messages, along with others very useful.
