>> In your list from your previous post, there were no modems that had transmission speeds of over 1.5MBits. <<

I sort of mixed the list of serial-modems and ethernet bridges, but one bridge I listed was:

Aironet BR500-E (25 km, 11 Mbps, full duplex), $3311.95

>> What do you think of the recent announcements by WiLan of higher speeds; eg 4.5MBits ,using 2.4MHz. and how does that compare to other vendors bringing out modems at comparable speeds. <<

4.5 Mbps is what Wi-LAN claims of their Hopper Plus 45-24. I've never seen or used their product, so I can't comment. It would be great to see a product comparison article. I've heard claims of 22-39 Mbps being possible with Wi-LAN's OFDM technology. Of course, OFDM is still immature and very much R&D, so I'll believe it when I see it.

The National Post reports in its Wednesday edition that Wi-Lan Inc. said yesterday it has received two purchase orders worth $550,000 (all figures in U.S. dollars) for its networking products for high-speed Internet access, with contracts worth another $37-million over the next three years expected to follow. Negotiations on the latter purchases are well advanced, a Wi-Lan official said. The Calgary-based company, which provides wireless data communications products and technology, said the order from Telia GlobalCast Internetworking AB will be used to expand a national high-speed wireless network in Sweden and several other countries. The buyer plans to offer Internet access and intranet access to small and medium-sized businesses, as well as homes.
