Ira, I hope you are right. I don't think SNE can correct HiFUD's head wobbling woes and get the product back on the market in 1 month. Usually after a bug arises in a product and it's fixed, it must to be Beta tested. Perhaps they could get the HiFUD to market in a year. By then IOM will own the majority of the market and will be ready to release the next generation products.
Another consideration for the future is Clik. In the next 6 months it will be interesting to see which OEMs adopt it. I hope many do. I don't think IBM's minidrive is a Clik competitor. It's too expensive and I think it targets a different market. Gottfried could probably tell you more. SR

Ira... with all considerations, I wouldn't expect too much from Q4/98, as we are still somewhat early in a recovery cycle. I think it will be reassuring... possibly even beating expectations marginally... but not blockbuster. However, with established product income, and Clik! finally adding to, rather than taking from, the bottom line... Q1/99 has promise of surprise. It was impossible to transend KE's policies overnight. We've paid the price in terms of cost, repentance and time. I think we are now in responsible hands with Glore. Imation can be formidable competition... but we do have the advantage at the moment. IOM will make money when we truly dominate the market and establish a healthy margin. That margin depends primarily upon Zip disks, Clik! and Clik! disks. I think all other IOM products are supportive in terms of real income. Look for Clik! to substantially kick in this quarter... and watch out for Q2 when JohnQ looks to spend his tax refunds... he's gonna want to take cheap pictures of the good life.

Regards,

BlackMarlin

>>With competition all but out of the way

I agree SNE, IMN and SYQT pose no current threat to IOM. But what about the CD-RW folks? Are they just standing still? Its been a while since a new CD-RW drive hit the market. I did see a Rihco CD-RW drive available at CompUSA for $400. It wrote to CD-RW media at 4x speed. If it was selling for $200 I would have brought it to replace my Zip drive I use for backup purposes. I wonder what IOM plans are to combat CD-RW drives when the price drops to consumer levels. Kim Edwards did a lot of market research that showed $200 was a good price point to generate consumer buying. CD-RW drives are not that far away. It seems to me HWP is a very large threat to IOM. Now, isn't that an interesting thought? To bad HWP does not tell the world 6 months in advance of what they are designing in their labs. They have a lot of bright engineers and its been a while since their last CD-RW product release. Could HWP or other companies be working on a $200 CD-RW drive?

Regular posters on this trend seem to be claiming victory. So I thought I would bring out a little FUD to get people heads out of the cloud. IOM still has a lot of competition.
