Colt reportedly considers alliance with Global TeleSystems for European ops

LONDON (AFX) - Colt Telecom Group PLC is considering expanding in Europe through a link-up up with the U.S.-owned Global TeleSystems, the Daily Mail reported.

An 8.5 bln stg merger or alliance would boost Colt to a size where it could challenge larger rivals for business, the newspaper said.

"Neither company would comment, but sources said talks have taken place," it added.

Global TeleSystems controls the Hermes long-distance European network. It recently acquired Esprit, giving it 35,000 business customers.
