>>>Unless the FUD HWP is working on is fast and can do multiple partial writes with the same disc, and without writing over the original data then it is still an archive device, and they can co-exsist.

I'm not sure what you are stating here. What I read on the CD-RW boxes at my local CompUSA store the drives come with software where the user can randomly create and erase files on a CD-RW disk. It looked like the CD-RW drive is assigned a separated drive letter. If there are other limitations, besides the slow speed, please notify the trend.

Software for CD-RW drives also can now sequentially write to CD-R media. I guess these means you can keep adding files to the disk until all 650MB are used up. A big improvement over the days when you had to burn the entire CD-R disk at one time. Since I do not own one of these drives I'm just recalling what I remember from reading whats on the box. Anyone with more knowledge of modern day CD-RW please post.

>>>It always amazes me how people keep getting the uses for these technologies mixed up.

So you don't think CD-RW drives are direct competition for IOM? I certainly do. I believe the two primary reasons for buying a removable storage drive is to perform backup and to share files. These functions can be performed by Zip, Jaz or a CD-RW drive. Certainly Zip and Jaz have advantages over CD-RW, like speed. But CD-RW has its own advantages, like creating custom audio CDs.

IOM can handle HiFD, LS120, SparQ. I believe the real ememy of IOM is the optical guys. I suspect many of the regular posters didn't even consider HWP as a competitor to IOM. Hopefully now you can give it some thought.
