Your Career Matters: Help Wanted

EV Global Motors Co. has revved up a hunt for a fleet-market
development manager to peddle bulk quantities of its electric bikes to
resorts, retirement communities and others. The Los Angeles concern,
set to begin production later this month, was founded by former
Chrysler Corp. leader Lee Iacocca and former General Motors Corp.
chief Robert C. Stempel. After getting a foothold in the
electric-bike market, the pair hopes to produce electric cars. They
hope car dealers will sell their bikes.

David Kurrasch, the DHR International recruiter handling the search,
answered our questions.

-- Will the manager face an uphill trek persuading people to buy
electric bikes? "Lee's idea is that firing up a huge gas-powered
car to get to the store is a waste and bad for the environment.
This person's {main} job is to convey that." The bikes, which are
projected to cost between $995 and $1,500, will have removable
batteries.

-- Will the fleet-market manager earn commissions? "The base
compensation...will be $84,000, plus an ability to earn unlimited
commissions. ... Total compensation could be closer to double the
base or higher."

-- Will the successful candidate get a fleet of bikes? "We will give
this person a few bikes for the family."

-- Are you looking for environmental types? "We want candidates who
can appreciate the full range of benefits these {bikes} provide."

-- Would you rule out contenders who drive gas guzzlers? "It's great
if they drive {a sport utility vehicle}, because soon they'll be
able to put a couple of folding electric bikes on board. Those are
coming next."

Flavin and Dunn's article, "Reinventing the Energy System" in Worldwatch's 1999 State of the World identifies ECD and Solectria as two of the five potential energy "Microsofts" they study.
